School administrators at York Comprehensive High School told
18-year-old Peyton Robinson to remove a flag from his pickup truck
because of safety concerns. The move sparked protests Thursday, which
led the school to backpedal on its policy.
James Crump, a parent of a York Comprehensive High School student,
partook in the protest. He said he was very angry when he first heard
that a student had been asked to remove Old Glory from his truck.
“We as Americans have lost so much already,” Crump said. “We didn’t
stand up for prayer, we lost prayer in school. We didn’t stand up for
the 10 Commandments, we lost that in the courthouse. But when you start
talking about the flag that so many [have] died for and these students
wanting to honor the flag, of course us as parents [are] going to stand
behind them.”
Crump said he was “blown away” by the community’s response. He said the protest was packed with flag supporters.
The school said in a statement that the “outstanding display of
patriotism through peaceful protest” has made it clear that the
community is unhappy with the flag policy. As a result, the school said
it would make an exception.
