Ryan Duggan, 19, was found guilty of attempted murder last week in an October 2014 shooting. Authorities say Duggan shot victim Daniel Kennedy when Kennedy confronted a group of people for turning off the water supply to his home.
Police say Duggan fired a sawed-off shotgun at Kennedy’s chest, but an iPhone in the victim’s jacket pocket took the brunt of the blast.
“This is remarkable – had that phone not been in his pocket at that time he would undoubtedly have died,” Detective Inspector Gary McIntyre said.
Despite making good progress [the victim] still requires treatment for his injuries – including further operations and rehabilitation. The nightmare is far from over. Duggan clearly believed that he was above the law – there was no doubt that his actions that night were to kill the victim - and the jury has agreed with this.
