At East Side Elementary School in Worland last week, an "intruder" in a hooded sweatshirt with a suspicious backpack appeared on a playground filled with children.
The school's gym teacher approached the man, tapped him on the shoulder and asked his name. The man took off running and the gym teacher, who had been briefed earlier in the week, began blowing his whistle and telling children, "Run! Run!"
Some students began breaking down in tears and others asked if they were going to die or ever see their parents again.
The school district says it notified parents of a "low-level" drill in an email, but some parents say they were unaware that the training exercise was taking place.
Sandra Smith said on "Outnumbered" that drills are necessary, but the kids should have had a heads-up.
"This is crazy," Jedediah Bila said. "You either have to get a consent form signed [and] brought in, but if I were the head of things here, I would have called. I would have had a conversation with parents, because parents need to have a conversation with their kids about this beforehand."
"Now, you're going to have traumatized kids, which is a complete disaster. This is not how they should have handled this."
Andrea Tantaros said there's a right way to do school drills like this and a wrong way.
"The right way is to talk to the kids, talk to parents, make it very orderly," Tantaros said. "This scares me. I would've been scared if it would have happened."
