Vladimir Katriuk passed away last week after a long illness, Orest Rudzik said Thursday.
News of Katriuk's death emerged several hours after the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said Ottawa should take the necessary steps to ensure that he be held accountable if he were found guilty of war crimes committed in collaboration with the Nazis.

Many foot tsunami could hit california

A new study calls attention to the tsunami hazard posed by a little-understood jumble of seafloor faults off the coast of Southern California — just in time to ride the wave of hype generated by the big-budget disaster movie "San Andreas. Image result for tsunami could hit california

The study's lead author, geologist Mark Legg, says a real-life offshore earthquake and tsunami wouldn't exactly follow Hollywood's script for a washout of Los Angeles or San Diego. Nevertheless, he says the hazard deserves more attention than it's received. Image: Borderland map

"That has not been looked at carefully when it comes to the potential for large earthquakes and tsunamis from offshore faults," Legg, who runs a Southern California consulting firm called Legg Geophysical, told NBC News.

Other earthquake experts insist the hazard has been looked at, but they acknowledge that the offshore faults are worthy of further study. "It's a complicated picture, and this is an important piece of it," said Lucy Jones, science adviser for risk reduction in the U.S. Geological Survey's Natural Hazards Mission Area.

Legg's latest research paper, accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, looks at a mostly underwater seismic region known as the California Continental Borderland. He said surveys of the region show a "complicated logjam" of faults caused by the smash-up of the Pacific tectonic plate and the North American plate.

The research draws upon mapping data from a depth survey in 2010 that covered more than 2,800 miles (4,500 kilometers) of fault lines on the ocean floor, plus data from earlier surveys. Legg and his colleagues focused on two fault zones in the Borderland — the Santa Cruz-Catalina Ridge Fault and the Ferrelo Fault.

Based on their measurements, the researchers determined that the seafloor crust in those areas was subject to horizontal strike-slip forces as well as vertical compression. Computer models showed that the offshore faults were capable of generating magnitude-8 earthquakes.

Legg said earlier underwater surveys found evidence of vertical movement along faults in the Borderland, amounting to as much as 10 feet (3 meters) — the kind of movement that can generate tsunami waves. "There's a smoking gun," Legg said.

Russia charged Katriuk earlier this month with genocide in connection with the 1943 killing of civilians in Khatyn, now part of Belarus. According to war reports, Katriuk was a member of a Ukrainian battalion of the SS, the elite Nazi storm troops, between 1942 and 1944. He had denied the accusations against him.

A study three years ago alleged Katriuk was a key participant in a village massacre.
The article said a man with Katriuk's name lay in wait in March 1943 outside a barn that had been set ablaze, operating a machine-gun and firing on civilians as they tried to flee the burning building.

US condemns China's land reclamation in South China Sea

The US has condemned China's land reclamation in the South China Sea, saying it is out of step with international rules.
Defence secretary Ash Carter called for an "immediate and lasting halt" of the works during the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, an international security conference, in Singapore on Saturday.
"First, we want a peaceful resolution of all disputes. To that end, there should be an immediate and lasting halt to land reclamation by all claimants," Carter said at the conference.
A Chinese military officer, also at the conference, immediately disputed the comments as "groundless and not constructive".Image result for US condemns China's land reclamation in South China Sea

Carter's comments came as defence officials revealed that China had put two large artillery vehicles on one of the artificial islands it is creating in the South China Sea.
The discovery, made at least several weeks ago, fuels fears in the US and across the Asia-Pacific that China will use the land reclamation projects for military purposes.

Last week the Chinese military ordered a US Navy P-8 Poseidon surveillance aircraft to leave an area above the heavily disputed Spratly Islands. But the US plane ignored the demand.
"There should be no mistake: the United States will fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows, as US forces do all around the world," Carter said in Singapore.Image result for US condemns China's land reclamation in South China Sea

He acknowledged that other claimants have developed outposts of differing scope and degree, including Vietnam with 48, the Philippines with eight, Malaysia with five and Taiwan with one.
"Yet, one country has gone much farther and much faster than any other, and that's China."
"It is unclear how much farther China will go. That is why this stretch of water has become the source of tension in the region and front-page news around the world."

Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas, who's been following events at the conference explained "freedom of navigation has basically been assured over 70 years, greatly because of the US presence.  Should there be a tip in that power balance, there's fear the chaos will result in instability in the region".
Ortigas added that nothing "concrete in terms of policy or agreements" is likely to come from the conference, but that it did allow for a "comfortable, stable space for constructive discussions."

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, on the basis of lines on Chinese maps published in the 1940s and locking it into disputes with several Southeast Asian neighbours - including Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Actor Dustin Diamond Convicted in Stabbing

TV actor Dustin Diamond was convicted Friday of two misdemeanors stemming from a barroom fight, but a Wisconsin jury cleared the former "Saved by the Bell" actor of the most serious felony charge. Image result for Actor Dustin Diamond Convicted in Stabbing
The jury's verdict came just hours after the 38-year-old actor testified that he never intended to stab anyone in the fight last Christmas Day. He had pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of recklessly endangering public safety, plus two misdemeanors — carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct.

The first misdemeanor carries a maximum sentence of nine months in prison, the second a maximum of 90 days in prison.
Diamond didn't display emotion at the jury's decision Friday night. He told reporters he couldn't comment as he left the courtroom after a 13-hour day of testimony and jury deliberations.
Diamond, who played the character Screech on the popular 1990s show, said some people had wanted to shake his hand and pose for photos at the bar, but that others were badgering him and his girlfriend, Amanda Schutz. He said he was trying to scare bar patrons in Port Washington after his girlfriend was punched in the face. Image result for Actor Dustin Diamond Convicted in Stabbing

"I felt like we were being set up for antagonistic purposes," he said.
Witnesses testified that Schutz pushed one woman at the bar and grabbed another woman's hand, initiating the incident. Schutz also faces a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge.
Diamond said he tried to help Schutz and took out his pocketknife to deter the group from hurting her more.

The man who was stabbed, 25-year-old Casey Smet, testified Thursday that he didn't know he had been stabbed until he had left the bar and was talking to police.
After maintaining a serious facade during most of the trial, Diamond grinned Friday when a defense attorney asked if he liked being compared to the character Screech. Diamond said he liked being identified in public as the goofy television character.

"That means they love you," Diamond said. "That means you're doing your job."
Ozaukee County District Attorney Adam Gerol argued Friday that Diamond lied about what happened and that the actor had scripted his testimony.

Gerol showed body-camera footage of Diamond's testimony to a Port Washington police officer the night of the fight. In the video Diamond first said he might have struck Smet with a pen. In a video of testimony later that night, Diamond said he had a knife at the bar, but hadn't used it to stab anyone.
The jury also convicted Schutz with disorderly conduct Friday night. Schutz faces a maximum of 90 days in prison.
A sentencing date for Diamond and Schutz has not been announced

A MAN WHOSE NAME HAS LEAD TO SUCCESS:GEJ

"Not because I was interested in any elective office, but what drove me into joining Alamieyeseigha’s team was that those of us from very small communities always have problems and sometimes you have to run to government for assistance. I felt that if I worked with him and luckily he won, I would know some of the people in government.

“When electioneering started after Abdusalami Abubakar took over, Alamieyeseigha did not call me. But somewhere along the line because we had worked together, one evening, one Bozimo and another person came to my house and asked me to run with Alamieyeseigha as deputy governor.
“I was living in Port Harcourt then and I knew how primaries work and I said I would think about it. In fact, the following day, I told Bozimo that I was not interested, but the whole thing changed later. The detail will come later. That was how Bozimo and Alamieyeseigha brought me in and during the election, we won.
“From 1999 to date, my people and Nigerians have given me rare opportunity, rare privilege. I was deputy governor, governor, vice-president and President of the country. I am grateful to all Nigerians.”
“Nigerians have given me so much that I cannot stay back. That is why I maintain that we need peace in this country. We need development in this country. Political crises don’t bring development. And I believe the new administration will work with all Nigerians and make sure Nigerians are happy. I am indeed happy about the statement the President made that he did not belong to any clique, but to Nigerians.

No one is surprised he is talking to attorneys” the source told Radar. “They are more surprised they lasted this long.” the source said

BREAKING: Local Muslim woman files lawsuit against sheriff's department for false arrest and removal of hijab.

On Thursday, May 28, the Arab-American Civil Rights League held a press conference regarding a federal complaint filed by a Muslim American woman against the Oceana County Sheriff’s Department, for forcing her to remove her hijab when she was falsely arrested.
34-year-old Fatme Dakroub, a Dearborn Heights resident, was vacationing at the Lake Michigan Sand Dunes with her children and other relatives on May 17 when a sheriff’s deputy pulled her over while she was driving a rented vehicle. The family was located in a parking lot designated for tourists.
The officer claimed she was speeding and questioned her UAE driver’s license. Dakroub had often traveled back and forth between the UAE and Michigan in recent years. Her Michigan driver’s license had expired, but under state law, she was still able to operate a vehicle with a UAE driver’s license. She had rented the vehicle in Oceana County, using that same license.
A deputy questioned a ticket Dakroub had received in the county in 2011, claiming it was unpaid. She told the officer that she had paid the ticket years ago.

The deputy arrested Dakroub while her daughter, niece and cousin, ages 13-15, were in the rented vehicle. Dakroub said she felt panicked because she didn’t want to leave the children behind.
One of the children contacted Dakroub’s brother, who was also on vacation with the family, but separated from them for a few hours.
During the arrest process, officers also contacted the immigration department, despite the fact that Dakroub is a U.S. citizen.

When Dakroub was taken in for booking, she was asked to remove her hijab while three male officers were present. She objected at first and asked for a female officer to assist her. She was told by the officers that she had to comply under the law.
A tearful Dakroub told reporters that the incident has scarred her and her family. She described the police officers as cruel and insensitive to her religious requests.

“It felt really insulting and humiliating,” Dakroub said. “You feel so violated and you can’t do anything. I was scared that if I opposed what they were asking me, then something bad might happen, like what we’ve seen on TV. They might do something and then say that I resisted. That was the worst experience ever of my life.”
After Dakroub removed her scarf, the police officers told her she would not be able to put it back on. She was not allowed to place a phone call until three hours after her arrest and was placed in a cell where other inmates were able to look at her.
When she asked to use the bathroom, officers said she could use a toilet in an open bathroom area that was visible to all the other inmates.

Dakroub.
“I don’t understand why they had to be so rude and mean,” Dakroub said. “I was being so polite with them and just trying to make them understand how uncomfortable I am.”
The ACRL said Dakroub’s constitutionally protected rights to religious freedom were violated.
Nabih Ayad, the executive director of the ACRL, and an attorney, said that several cases are going through the court system where law enforcement officials are arguing that a Muslim woman should remove her hijab due to public safety concerns.
“From the law enforcement belief, I suspect they tell you it’s an issue of public safety to check whether there is something hidden in the hijab,” Ayad said. “But what we in the civil rights community believe is that, for instance, there could be a female called upon to have the hijab removed and take those necessary steps.”

Ayad added that if a police department does not have a female on duty, then officers should consider using gloves and limiting the Muslim woman’s exposure to other men. He argued that after a thorough inspection, an arrested Muslim woman should have a right to put her scarf back on.
In Dakroub’s case, she was placed in a holding cell without her scarf despite her requests to put it back on.  Other inmates subjected her to verbal harassment for at least four hours.
“It’s not necessary for the individual to be victimized in this fashion,” Ayad added. “She was subjected to humiliation, isolation and harassment.”

He also said that for hours male inmates tried making passes at Dakroub.
“You can only suspect the embarrassment and humiliation this individual had to go through,” he said. “It’s bad enough to be falsely arrested, but then to have her first amendment rights violated is a flagrant disrespect and is an abuse of power with law enforcement.”

ACRL Field Director Samia Hamid said that police officers should receive proper training in interacting with multi-cultural communities, especially in an area such as Oceana County, a popular tourist destination.
“We are asking for more sensitivity, more education and more awareness for all their officers,” Hamid said.

On Thursday, the ACRL sent a federal complaint to the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Michigan. The complaint asks for a federal judge to rule that the Oceana County Sherriff’s Department’s practices be deemed unconstitutional under the first amendment.
“We are asking a federal judge today to take action and to stop this continuous harassment and intimidation and set some policy across the line as to how to deal with individuals with their first amendment rights,” Ayad added.
